On May 9th, the "Investment in Cameroon" website reported that on May 3rd, the Minister of Water Resources and Energy of Cameroon stated at the Kako Renewable Energy Popularization Forum that Kako plans to increase its installed capacity of renewable energy to 1500MW by 2035, accounting for 25% of the total installed capacity (currently less than 5%). The current total installed capacity of Kashgar Electric Power is 1562.4MW, of which the installed capacity of hydropower and solar energy are 959.6MW and 30.83MW, respectively, accounting for 63% of the installed capacity. According to the regulations of the Kashgar Electric Power Department, an installed capacity of less than 5MW is considered renewable energy, so the 958MW hydroelectric installed capacity is not considered renewable energy.
To achieve the target of installing renewable energy by 2035, Kashgar plans to develop 50 small hydropower stations and vigorously promote photovoltaic power generation. The first small hydropower station, Mbakaou Carri è re 1.4 MW hydropower station in the Adamawa region, was completed in 2021. In September 2023, the President approved the contract for 5 small hydropower stations to be awarded to HIG Group, with an additional 44 planned to be built within the next 10 years. The solar energy promotion plan consists of four parts: centralized production, off grid solutions, solar household metering, and solar net metering. At present, Norwegian company Scatec has established a total installed capacity of 30MW solar power plants in Marua and Jeddah, and plans to increase the solar installed capacity to 250MW by 2030. In addition, 360 small-scale off grid power stations have been built in rural areas of Kashgar, with a power supply rate of 40% in rural areas.
