As of October 2024, India's renewable energy capacity exceeds 200GW, with solar energy growing by 28%

2024-12-04

According to the latest data from India's Ministry of New Renewable Energy (MNRE), the total installed capacity of renewable energy in India has grown by an astonishing 24.2GW, or 13.5%, within a year, from 178.98GW in October 2023 to 203.18GW in October 2024.

In October 2024, India's renewable energy generation reached a new high of 203.18GW, with an annual growth rate of 13.5%. This growth is led by the solar industry, with the photovoltaic industry reaching 92.12GW in October 2024, with an annual growth rate of 27.9%.

This significant growth is in line with India's ambitious goals in the renewable energy sector and Modi's "Panchamrit" target, which aims to increase the total installed capacity of non fossil fuels, including nuclear energy, from 186.46 GW in 2023 to 211.36 GW in 2024.

The solar energy industry saw a significant growth of 20.1GW (27.9%), increasing from 72.02GW in October 2023 to 92.12GW in October 2024. The total installed capacity of solar energy, including ongoing and tendered projects, is currently 250.57GW, a significant increase from last year's 166.49GW.

Wind energy has also steadily grown, with installed capacity increasing by 7.8%, from 44.29GW completed in October 2023 to 47.72GW in 2024. The total installed capacity of the planned wind power project has now reached 72.35 GW.

In the past year, solar power generation has surged by 28% and wind power generation has grown by nearly 8%. This significant growth demonstrates our commitment to sustainable development and clean energy, "said Pralhad Joshi, India's new renewable energy minister, in an article on X

From April to October 2024, India added 12.6GW of renewable energy generation. In October 2024 alone, 1.72GW was installed.

There has been a significant increase in the number of renewable energy projects being implemented and tendered. As of October 2024, there are 143.94 GW of renewable energy projects being implemented and 89.69 GW of renewable energy projects being tendered. Compared to the 99.08 GW of renewable energy projects being implemented and 55.13 GW of renewable energy projects being tendered in October 2023, this number has significantly increased, indicating continued progress towards India's clean energy goals.

As of October 2024, large-scale hydropower projects have contributed 46.93 GW to India's renewable energy portfolio, while nuclear power has contributed 8.18 GW. These contributions enhance the diversity and resilience of India's renewable energy structure, supporting the country's comprehensive transition to green energy.
