SPD can be divided into voltage switching type, voltage limiting type, and combination type based on its working principle. Voltage switching SPDs exhibit high impedance when there is no instantaneous overvoltage. Once they respond to lightning instantaneous overvoltage, their impedance will suddenly change to low impedance, allowing lightning current to pass through. Therefore, they are also known as "short-circuit switching SPDs". Voltage limiting SPDs also have high impedance when there is no instantaneous overvoltage.
However, as the surge current and voltage increase, their impedance will continue to decrease, and their current voltage characteristics are strongly nonlinear, sometimes referred to as "clamp type SPDs". The combined SPD is composed of voltage switching and voltage limiting components, which can exhibit characteristics of voltage switching, voltage limiting, or both, depending on the characteristics of the applied voltage.
